Speech and Language Therapy: Incredible Changes

“For me, this course not only opened the door to a new specialization but also brought a life-changing turning point,” said Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Minh, a trainee of the speech and language therapy training course organized by MCNV at the end of June 2025 as part of the Inclusion IIb Project.

My name is Nguyen Thi Kim Minh. I am currently working as a rehabilitation technician at Hoai An District Health Center (former Binh Dinh province).

In July 2024, after a right styloidectomy surgery, I encountered difficulties in communication and daily activities. I began to speak with a lisp. Eating became a struggle; I had reflux with food and liquid coming back up through my nose, similar to those with a cleft palate.

No matter how hard I tried to repeat myself, people could not get what I meant. I lost my confidence and became frustrated. My colleagues had to handle all the communication with my patients on my behalf. I even avoided verbal communication with family and friends.

I went to various healthcare facilities and consulted numerous specialists, but no one could figure out the cause. I found it so disheartening and exhausting to be a rehabilitation technician myself but unable to find a solution for my own problems.

By researching, I had a vague idea that certain Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) techniques could help my condition. However, SALT services were mainly available in big cities, which made them very difficult for me to access.

In June 2025, I was informed of a training course for health professionals on SALT, jointly organized by MCNV and Da Nang University of Medical Technology and Pharmacy (UMP) within the Inclusion IIb project. As a rehabilitation technician, I thought this would be helpful for my work and also saw it as a chance to seek a solution to my own problems. I quickly registered and was fortunate to be one of the 30 health professionals selected to participate in the course.

During the five-day course (June 25-29, 2025), I acquired so much valuable knowledge. We learned how to communicate with children with autism in theory and participated in preclinical and clinical practice. The learning process was so enjoyable under the thorough guidance of two dedicated instructors, who meticulously answered every question we had.

When I shared my personal struggle, Ms. Luong Thi Cam Van, the Vice Head of the Rehabilitation Department, Head of the SALT Division, Da Nang UMP, spent time to assess my situation. It turned out that my lisping and choking were due to a weak soft palate and pharyngeal muscles, leading to the sounds being emitted nasally, making eating and drinking difficult as well.

After a thorough assessment, Ms. Van guided me through a series of specific SALT exercises, such as practicing precise pronunciation and combining exercises with the purpose of improving awareness and distinguishing the difference between the high-pressure sounds like /b/, /p/, /k/, and /t/ with my nose blocked and unblocked. The exercises were designed to strengthen the muscles involved in closing the soft palate, which helped me gradually learn to navigate airflow through my mouth instead of my nose, reducing nasal air leakage.

I diligently followed her instructions. I recalled how I used to encourage my own patients to be persistent with their physical therapy, and I told myself: “Be perseverant, you’ll see the change!” With that in mind, I dedicated myself to practicing pronunciation every morning, every night, and whenever I had a free moment, without missing a single day.

I could see my improvement with each passing day. After just one week, my condition had significantly improved. Within 20 days, I had fully recovered my ability to speak and swallow. My pronunciation was clear, the lisp was gone, and I no longer worried about choking. My life was back to normal as if I had never had any difficulties with communication and daily activities.

On the day I realized my miraculous recovery, it felt so incredible that I could not sleep. It all felt like a dream, as I had never believed a full recovery was possible. Not just me, but everyone around me – my family, friends, and colleagues – were astonished and overjoyed. If I hadn’t told them, new acquaintances wouldn’t even know I once struggled with communication. To this day, I still maintain a regular exercise routine to ensure the recovered muscles don’t weaken again.

I am so grateful to Ms. Van and feel incredibly lucky to have participated in the MCNV’s training. My personal experience has shown me the miraculous impact of SALT and the profound meaning of rehabilitation for those struggling with the same challenges.

My personal experience with SALT is now an endless driving force pushing me forward in my continuous learning journey. I will try my best to improve my professional skills so that I can help others facing obstacles in communication and daily living achieve the same life-changing progress that Ms. Van helped me realize.

MCNV SUMMER CAMPAIGN 2025

A healthy start for children in Sepone and Phin

Dear donors,                                                                                                                                        June 26, 2025

Life in Sepone and Phin is tough. Most people in this region in Laos, close to the Vietnamese province of Quang Tri, make a living from agriculture. However, the poor soil yields little and the yield is not very nutritious. As a result, children do not get enough to eat and lag behind in their physical and mental development due to malnutrition. They are also vulnerable to diseases. Their parents are very concerned about this, but they do not have the knowledge and experience to improve the food situation for their children and themselves. Schools and health posts are difficult to reach for the people in these municipalities due to the great distances. MCNV has developed a program that successfully tackles these problems. We also want to realize the structural improvements that were previously achieved in Nong in Sepone and Phin.

Successful multidisciplinary program

More than ten years ago we started this program in the municipality of Nong and in the ten years since then we have broadened and deepened the program together with the AFAS Foundation and with our private donors. This broad, multidisciplinary approach and the collaboration with local partners (health service, agricultural organizations, village health workers, schools and -last but not least- the villagers themselves) has positively changed the situation in Nong and Sepone.

Continue in Sepone and Phin

Last year we made an agreement with the municipality of Sepone to continue the collaboration in this project for another three years. The neighboring municipality of Phin joined in. The goal is to improve the food situation and the health of more than 700 young children and their families (2850 people in total) in those three years. We will do this, just like in the past ten years, with the same multidisciplinary program.

Triodos Foundation will participate for the next three years and the AFAS Foundation will also remain our permanent partner until the end of 2027. All income and donations together mean that we can really do a lot, reach more people and realize more structural improvements.

Our question

Will you join us to give the children in Sepone and Phin a healthy start? Every donation is very welcome.

Many thanks in advance for the (extra) gift!

Warmest,

Karin Vlug

Improving Livelihoods for Poor Women in Phu Yen

On June 17, 2025, in La Hai Township, Dong Xuan District, Phu Yen Province, MCNV, in collaboration with the District People’s Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dong Xuan District, organized a closing workshop for the project “Boost Income and Jobs for Poor Women in Ethnic Minority Areas of Dong Xuan District” (referred to as the BIJPO project).

The BIJPO project has been being implemented over a three-year period, from November 2022 to November 2025, across 15 ethnic minority villages of six communes of Dong Xuan District, including Da Loc, Phu Mo, Xuan Lanh, Xuan Phuoc, Xuan Quang 1, and Xuan Quang 2. The objectives of the project are to create jobs, improve working conditions, and enhance agricultural production and business capacity for poor women through the operation of women’s cooperative groups and household-scale production groups, thereby providing local food sources and increasing income through agricultural products.

The project’s key interventions include:

(1) Supporting women-led production and business cooperative groups such as plastic chair weaving, red rice production, brocade weaving, community-based tourism, acacia seedling nursery, agricultural product processing, and cattle breeding;

(2) Enhancing household production capacity and conditions through diversified production models, such as fish farming, fruit tree planting, scattered forestry planting, organic vegetable gardening, mushroom growing, black snail raising, and provision of grass-cutting machines;

(3) Supporting micro-entrepreneurs in expanding production and trade activities to supply food and agricultural input materials to the community.

Some products of the women’s cooperative group were displayed at the workshop

After nearly 3 years of implementation, the project has brought about many positive results. In total, 419 women participated in 19 women’s cooperative groups implementing eight production and business models. Additionally, 661 households benefited from eight household-level agricultural production models, and 15 micro-entrepreneurs engaged in small-scale food and agricultural supply businesses. It is estimated that approximately 11,000 residents across the six communes indirectly benefited from the project’s activities.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Pham Dung – MCNV Vietnam Country Director – highly appreciated the contributions of the Dong Xuan District People’s Committee and the Department of Agriculture and Environment throughout the implementation of the BIJPO project.

Mr. Pham Dung – MCNV Vietnam Country Director spoke at the closing workshop

The project has a total investment of VND 11.5 billion, of which the local government has contributed VND 5.8 billion as counterpart funding sourced from national target programs – 190% higher than the initial commitment. The local government also established a district-level Project Management Unit (comprising the People’s Committee, Department of Agriculture and Environment, Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, Department of Ethnic Affairs, and Women’s Union) to monitor and provide technical support for the project activities.

From July to November 2025, MCNV will continue to implement several remaining activities in the project area, with a particular focus on strengthening several women’s cooperative groups to ensure sustainability and scalability of the models in the future.
